In Conversation with a Sigma Homes Senior Designer: Designing Homes with Heart

At Sigma Homes, every project starts with a conversation and that’s especially true when it comes to designing a dream home. We sat down with one of our Senior Designers, Marcela Matos, to talk about what makes their role so special, the joy of helping clients build homes they truly love, and the design features they’d choose for their own space.

What’s your role at Sigma Homes, and what do you love most about it?

“I’m a Senior Designer at Sigma Homes, and the part of my job I enjoy most is working closely with clients to create the best design solutions for their home.

From the first consultation to the finished interior, I get to help clients shape a space that reflects who they are, their style, their needs, and their vision for everyday living.

What I value most is the freedom to be creative and to collaborate openly with the design team. We share ideas, ask questions, and work together to create beautiful, practical homes that stand the test of time.”

What’s your favourite part of helping clients build their dream home?

“For me, it’s the opportunity to dream together with each client. I know that building or renovating a home is a big step. It takes planning, effort and often years of saving. My aim is always to respect a client’s budget and wishes while helping them get the most from their space.

Seeing families happy throughout the journey, and especially at handover – is so rewarding. Watching them step into their new chapter makes all the design challenges worthwhile.”

If you could design your own dream home, what’s one must-have feature?

“In my own home, I’d choose a traditional style with a calm, warm palette — neutral tones with accents of sage green and navy for a bit of personality.

A must-have for me would be an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space with a vaulted ceiling. Add herringbone timber-effect flooring, white marble worktops, and plenty of natural light from large windows – and that’s my idea of perfect!

My favourite feature would be a stone-surrounded fireplace or stove, the heart of the home on cosy evenings.”

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone renovating or extending their home?

Renovations and extensions are exciting, but good planning makes all the difference. Here are three simple tips:

  • Think about daily life first. How does your family use the space, and what matters most to you? Setting clear priorities early helps guide the design.
  • Focus on layout over size. A well-planned layout can make even modest space feel generous and more functional.
  • Don’t chase trends. Create a home that feels right for you — one that you’ll love living in day after day.

Whether you’re just starting to explore ideas or are ready to bring your project to life, our team at Sigma Homes is here to help every step of the way.
